A child is born . . . for a smiling Sinead [www.unison.ie 23 December 2006 by Frank Khan] 23 December 2006, 20:40
|
SINEAD O'Connor is a mother again.
She gave birth to a baby boy in Dublin's Mount Carmel Hospital on Wednesday. Yesterday she was well enough to brave a chill winter afternoon to take a quiet stroll in the hospital grounds with partner, American businessman Frank Bonadio, as our picture shows.
Sinead and the new arrival are expected to be home at the couple's house in Bray, Co Wicklow for Christmas.
Last night the hospital was not releasing any information about the singer or her new baby.
The controversial Dubliner (40) already has three other children, Jake (18) by drummer John Reynolds; Roisin (10) whose father is columnist John Waters; and two-year-old Shane.
Earlier this year she railed against Frank's estranged wife Mary Coughlan via her website.
But the war of words quickly died down.
She has also just issued a special Christmas card CD through record stores here ahead of her new album 'Theology', which will be released by Rubyworks next spring.
Sinéad ranked among the most distinctive and controversial pop music stars of the 1990s and was widely regarded as being hugely influential.

Sinead's formaldehyde cow [www.unison.ie 10 December 2006 by Lynne Kelleher] 11 December 2006, 22:15
|
SINGER Sinead O'Connor has revealed why she ripped up a picture of Pope John Paul II on live TV in the US, causing her Stateside career to bomb.
Her defiant tearing of the pope's picture on Saturday Night Live in 1992 was a defining moment in Nineties popular culture and it whipped up a storm in Middle America.
In a new documentary, God Gave Rock and Roll To You (Channel 4, December 23), O'Connor said she was also making a statement about the way the Catholic church was ignoring child-abuse claims in Ireland.
She said, "Partly . . . I was wondering what would actually happen if you were to do that, to test. Sometimes as an artist you just want to know what would happen if you cut a cow in half and stuck it in formaldehyde. It was very, very interesting, because obviously everybody thought I was a lunatic.
"I don't know why it is that Americans get steamrollers and roll over copies of people's records when they don't like what you say."
He said, "If you wanted to ensure no one in America ever buys one of your records again, a pretty good way togo about it is to tear up apicture of the pope on live TV."
In the two-hour documentary, theologian and pop lover Dr Robert Beckford examines the turbulent relationship between religion and pop music. He said, "I remember the press after the Sinead O'Connor scandal; it was so vitriolic. Pop used to be able to change the world with these kinds of protests, yet now it was being censored by the public itself."

Sinead O'Connor releases free audio Christmas card [www.hotpress.com 7 December 2006] 10 December 2006, 19:00
|
Sinead O’Connor will be releasing two newly recorded songs as a special audio Christmas card on December 15.
"If You Had A Vineyard" and "Jeremiah (Something Beautiful)" are two, new exquisite songs written and gathered together by Sinead for a unique release in the festive season. They're an aural greeting to her fans celebrating the inspirational new music she has been working on in 2006.
"'If You Had A Vineyard' is a protest song I guess, Sinead explains. But it's more of an anti war song. I have always been fascinated with how the books of the prophets relate to things nowadays even though they were written hundreds or thousands of years ago.
"I read Isaiah and took the lines from it that I liked and adapted them so they rhymed. My desire was not to use anything that perpetuated the myth of a God character being angry and aggressive.
"I suppose I observe a lot of violence done in the name of theologies of various religions, but when you study the actual texts of those religions you find that they don't back up anyone who might use them to justify war or violence or anything really which is unloving of people."
The release will be available free to the public in Ireland on a two-track CD Digipak, on a first come first served basis, from record stores.
It will also be available internationally as a download on Sinead's website www.sineadoconnor.com and at www.emusic.com. Fans will also be able to watch exclusive video performances of the two songs at Sinead.s site and at www.myspace.com/sineadoconnormusic.
Speaking about the unusual decision to make her music available for free, Sinead commented.
"I'm so excited and proud of this new record. I didn't want to wait until April next year for it to be heard, and I want as many people as possible to hear it. Obviously, more people will hear it if it's out there for free in the shops and on the internet. Also, the song 'Jeremiah (Something Beautiful)' talks about Christmas, so it seems appropriate to be doing this at the right time of the year."
Irish stockists of the Christmas card CD include Golden Discs, HMV, Virgin, Road Records, Freebird, Tower, Heartbeat City, Roxy, Zhivago, BPM and all good independent record stores.
This unique initiative precedes the release of a new Sinead O.Connor album entitled Theology, which will be released by Rubyworks in spring 2007.

SINEAD O'CONNOR new double album 'Theology' Out April 2007 [www.rubyworks.com 8 November 2006] 9 November 2006, 19:50
|
We are delighted to announce our newest singing, Sinead O'Connor. Rubyworks will be releasing Sinead's new album 'Theology' in April next year. The acoustic disc on the double album was produced by Steve Cooney and the other was produced by Ron Thom (worked on Sugar Babes).
We will be releasing 2 tracks off the record before Christmas for free. More details soon.
Sinead will be launching a new website and myspace site soon.
Sinéad O'Connor is currently working on her eight studio album, titled Theology, to be released some time next year.
Theology is to be O'Connor's third straight album of "spiritual" songs, and the first to consist solely of original material. It follows 2002's Sean Nós Nua (literally 'The New Old Style'), a collection of traditional Irish songs sung in the distinctive 'sean nós' style, and her 2005 album of rasta covers Throw Down Your Arms.
Asked about the recording of the album, O'Connor answered: "It's all acoustic, and I always wanted to make an acoustic album, as bare as possible, with just voice and guitar a lot of the time. And I always wanted to write a book of theology, but I can't write books so I'm doing it with songs."
She's since decided to record the album on two discs with the same songs, one acoustic and one featuring a full band, and will premier much of the new material at an exclusive invite-only performance at the Sugar Club in Dublin next week. Tickets for the event are being given away via the artist's website.
Theology will be released on Sinéad's own That's Why There's Chocolate And Vanilla label.

Gabriel preps long-in-the-works set for fall release Sinéad on Peter Gabriel's new album [news.scotsman.com 5 August 2006 by Nigel Williamson] 27 August 2006, 18:30
|
It's taken 15 years, but Peter Gabriel has finally completed the "Big Blue Ball" album, a multi-artist project that started during a series of sessions at his Real World studios in the early 1990s.
"The idea was to put rock musicians together with musicians from all over the world and see what happened," Gabriel said from his Wiltshire, England, base. "We ran the studio like a dating service with a 24-hour cafe."
Recording took place over three years in a series of weeklong residential sessions. "But," Gabriel said, "the tapes were left in a mess, and it's taken this long to sort out." Eventually, producer Stephen Hague (Pet Shop Boys, New Order) was recruited to pull the album into shape.
Gabriel takes several lead vocals on the album. Other singers include Sinead O'Connor, Karl Wallinger (World Party), Natacha Atlas and Papa Wemba backed by a mix of Western, African and Asian musicians.
"Big Blue Ball" is due globally on Real World/EMI this fall.
"The size of the cast means it's not something you can tour," Gabriel said. "But if it sells, maybe we can record a follow-up."

SINEAD O'CONNOR CANCELLED
We are very sorry to inform you, that Sinéad O'Connor has cancelled her Prague performance due to ill health. We are currently working hard on booking another star to complete the festival line-up.... Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor will sing at open air festival Music In The Park as well as American gospel band Blind Boys of Alabama.
There will be many foreign performenrs, mostly from English speaking countries. There will be of course Czech perfromers like Jiri Suchy or Blue Effect.
This festival is 22nd July in Prague Stromovka. Concerts starts at midnoon and end at midnight.
Sinead O´Connor, Blind Boys of Alabama a Maceo Parker a další
Konečně se i Pražané dočkají svého letního festivalu a nebudou muset vybírat z nabídky mimopražských akcí, kam se vydají o víkendu. V sobotu 22. července proběhne v pražské Stromovce první ročník mezinárodního festivalu s dovětkem „Blues and more music…“.
Již více než 100 let využívají Pražané bývalou královskou oboru, kde pořádal své hony císař Rudolf II., k procházkám, hrám a romantickým schůzkám.

Sinead tops big weekend
[www.sligoweekender.ie 6 May 2006 by Sandra Coffey] 6 Juny 2006, 20:00
|
Sligo basked in glorious sunshine over the weekend, in what was a great place to be for lovers of all types of music.
Fans had rock, country and traditional on offer in various venues all over Sligo and many were spoiled for choice.
It was also a fantastic weekend for anyone who just wanted to laze around and enjoy the first signs of summer.
The choice was endless. A trip to Riverstown Vintage Festival is always a sure winner and it proved its worth yet again this year. Country star Patrick Feeney kept the huge crowds entertained with some old and new hits.
Across the county in Strandhill, upcoming talent in traditional music mixed with seasoned performers at the Sligo County Fleadh. In between competitions, there was street entertainment, singing sessions and ceilí.
It was billed the biggest attraction in Sligo this summer and Sligo LIVE kicked off on Friday night last with rising star Declan O’Rourke and local band Dervish. It followed off a good start with bands like The Proclaimers and a finale with Sinead O’Connor on Sunday night.

Craic flows as music lovers soak up sun
[www.unison.ie 6 May 2006 by Anita Guidera] 6 Juny 2006, 20:00
|
IT was all about sun, craic and sessions for thousands of music lovers at the weekend.
Sligo renewed its bid to be known as the music capital of Ireland as thousands converged for the inaugural Sligo Live Music Festival and annual Fleadh Ceoil.
Against the magnificent sun-soaked backdrop of Ben Bulben mountain, festival-goers enjoyed top performances from acts ranging from Sinead O'Connor, Kate Rusby and the Proclaimers to Sligo's own Dervish and Midnight Well.
A relaxed looking Sinead O'Connor posed for photographs with visiting Canadians, and mingled comfortably with fans on Sunday evening before delivering a mellow unplugged set. Fans shouting requests for old hits were disappointed. "Troy," one shouted, to which she replied "I'm troying", to the audience's delight.
Kirsten Day, from Vancouver, Canada, and her three friends were on holiday in Ireland when they found out about the festival.
"We heard it was going on and we had to come. It is so awesome.
"I was young when Sinead first came on the scene but I'm a big fan and so are my friends, so we just had to be here," she said.
The most talked about performance of the weekend was from English folk singer Kate Rusby, who delivered a beautiful set, while American-Irish traditional group Solas raised the canvas in a rousing performance which closed the festival on Sunday night.
Another big highlight of the weekend were the novelty world air fiddling championships and a door dancing competition.
Now plans are already underway for next year's event.
"We had wanted it to be different from other festivals in that it was organised on a non-profit basis by volunteers.
"There were people here who thought that festivals were for the 20-something age group. This is a move back to the type of roots music festival where the punter is king," said festival organiser Rory O'Connor.

Sinead O'Connor talks exclusively to Hot Press
[www.hotpress.com 26 May 2006] 30 May 2006, 20:00
|
Sinead O'Connor isn't exactly one to take things lying down, and some US websites are about to find this out for themselves. In an exclusive chat with Hot Press she puts the story straight and talks about her next album. Only here folks!
She has taken cease and desist action against a number of US websites, who've recently published a photo, which they claimed, showed her smoking whilst pregnant.
Talking exclusively this week to Hotpress, the singer insists that the allegations are completely without foundation.
"The paparazzi took a photograph of me, wearing a baggy jumper, with my boyfriend in Manhattan, which a couple of websites took as pictorial proof that I was heavily pregnant," O'Connor says. "If I had been heavily pregnant, I wouldn't have been stupid enough to smoke a cigarette out in the street in front of a bunch of paparazzi.
"Anyway, they ran a bunch of stories that said I was pregnant and smoking, which lead to some very violent remarks being made on these sites from the various losers who frequent them. One of the milder ones was that I should be beaten up for smoking whilst pregnant, which of course would be very good for my unborn baby."
"As it happens, I am nine weeks pregnant at the moment, which I didn't become for a few weeks after that photograph was taken," Sinéad continues. Threatened with legal action by her American lawyer Rob Cohen, one site immediately apologised and took down the offending photo - but others have yet to admit or rectify their error.
"These are the type of sites that put up stories and invite comments, a number of which in this instance were incitements of violence towards me," she resumes. "There were calls for me to be shot, beaten up and all kinds of things. I was also included in a list of supposedly "Bad Celebrity Mothers" alongside Britney Spears.
"The way they go after her, a mere girl, is a fucking joke," Sinéad adds.
On a more upbeat note, O'Connor has finished recording a double album, Theology, which is due in October. The collection gets one of its first public airings on June 4 when she lines up alongside Solas, Martin Hayes & Denis Cahill, Mairiad & Triona Ni Domnaill and Guggenheim Grotto at the Sligo Live Festival.
"It's the same songs on each side, but performed with just acoustic guitar and voice on one, and full band and production on the other," Sinéad explains. "The former, which I'm calling the "Dublin Side" was done with Steve Cooney, and the latter - the "London Side" - was done with a hip hop/pop producer called Ron Tom, who's recorded people like the Sugababes. What I'll be performing is the acoustic version, plus four or five older songs, yet to be decided."
American fans get their turn in August when O'Connor joins Ziggy Marley, Michael Franti and Barrington Levy at California's Reggae On The River festival.

Sinead: I Wasn't Puffing While Pregnant Singer says online reports libelous, a bald-faced lie [The Smoking Gun 10 May 2006] 17 May 2006, 20:30
|
MAY 10--Singer Sinead O'Connor is threatening legal action against web sites that have recently published a photo purportedly showing her pregnant and smoking a cigarette. In a May 5 cease and desist letter, attorney Rob Cohen writes that O'Connor "was not pregnant at the time that such photograph was taken," adding that the performer "takes her reputation as a good parent and responsible mother very seriously." The photo in question (which can be seen here) was reportedly snapped in late-March as O'Connor walked on a Manhattan street with an unidentified man. While a cigarette can clearly be seen in her right hand, it is less certain as to what is causing the bump/ripple/undulation in her red sweatshirt. Through her counsel, O'Connor, a 39-year-old mother of three, contends that she "is unable to simply ignore these postings" and demands the immediate extinguishing of any story claiming that she was jointly with child and cigarette.

O'Connor threatens legal action over bogus story [uk.news.yahoo.com 12 May 2006] 17 May 2006, 20:30

Irish singer Sinead O'Connor has threatened websites and publications who distribute a photograph purportedly showing her smoking a cigarette while pregnant with legal action.
The snap was taken in March when the Nothing Compares 2 U was walking down a New York City street with a male companion. A cigarette can be clearly seen in her hand, but it is unclear whether an apparent ripple in her jumper is proof she is pregnant.
O'Connor's lawyer Rob Cohen has issued a cease and desist letter which, according to the Smoking Gun, sates O'Connor "was not pregnant at the time that such photograph was taken," adding that the performer "takes her reputation as a good parent and responsible mother very seriously".

Perry Pacts With O'Connor, Clinton On New CD [billboard.com 11 Feb 2006 by Wes Orshoski, N.Y] 11 Feb 2006, 15:30 |
Reggae icon Lee "Scratch" Perry's 2005 international release, "Panic in Babylon," will see a spring U.S. release, augmented with several bonus tracks. The 17-track disc, due May 16 via New York-based Narnack Records, will boast duets with Sinead O'Connor ("It's Time") and George Clinton ("Pussy Man"), and remixes from Moby ("Purity Rock") and TV On The Radio ("Fight to the Finish").
O'Connor, who recently covered a pair of Perry songs on her current roots reggae disc, "Throw Down Your Arms," and Clinton are also working with the dub wizard on a disc celebrating his renowned work with the original incarnation of Bob Marley's Wailers, according to Perry's manager, Al Davis.
That project, for which a title and release date has not yet been set, will be composed of songs co-written and produced by Perry in the early 1970s, during the Wailers' most storied period, prior to the departure of founders Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. It is to feature O'Connor on "Duppy Conqueror" and Clinton on "Soul Almighty."

Sinead Goes AWOL on TV Show... [showbizireland.com 11 Jan 2006] 15 Jan 2006, 18:30 |
TV3's Brendan Courtney Show was busy advertising three big names on their programme this week: actor Vinnie Jones, Big Brother's Anthony Hutton & singer Sinead O'Connor - but one of them mysteriously went AWOL...
When ShowBiz Ireland's photographers got down to the recording of The Courtney Show in Howl at the Moon this week there was a sense-of-calm as they knew they had at least 4 hours to photograph the 3 guests.
Controversial singer Sinead O'Connor was already at the prerecording with her daughter before UK guests Vinnie Jones & Anthony Hutton arrived.
But soon after the show got under way Sinead excused herself to go for a loo-break and never came back...
According to reports Brendan had arranged a Blind-date skit where the Nothing Compares To You singer would be set-up to pick a handsome hunk - it would then be revealed he was from Monkstown. Apparently joke being that Sinead had once said there were no good looking men in Monkstown!
The baffling thing about Sinead's mysterious disappearance was that there were security and photographers at all doors, so how did she escape? Probably a shimmy-down-the-drainpipe!

Blind date to blind fury . . . TV prank sparks Sinead walkout [www.unison.ie 11 Jan 2006] 11th Januar 2005, 18:30 |
SINEAD O'Connor has accused TV3's Brendan Courtney show of "ambushing" her after revealing why she walked off his show just before it went on air.
"They knew for three months that I was coming on and they bull-s***ted my record company," she fumed.
Sinead was due to be interviewed on Monday night at the 'Howl at the Moon' venue in Dublin to talk about her new acoustic album. However, just before the show, she was left "mortified" after the producer sat her down and told her they had set her up on a blind date - despite her being in a serious relationship.
Even worse, she was told to pick the third guy because he was a "plant" and it turned out it was an elderly man and she was due to go on a mock date in a hot-air balloon.
"That was the whole joke, that this old guy was going on a date with someone like me. I found it very disrespectful," she explained.
The reason for the gag was a throw-away comment she had made about the local guys in her area.
"I was supposed to have said on a TV show a few months ago that there were no sexy men in Monkstown so they wanted to do a skit around that," she said.
"So they went out to my local pub and rounded up three guys who were supposed to be like prospective dates for me. I was supposed to pick out my favourite and pretend to go on a date with him." However, not only does the controversial singer have a serious boyfriend who she says "is actually the sexiest man on earth", Sinead was also angry that the show's producers hadn't been honest about what was planned.
"It's not a fair thing to do and they're obviously banking on the fact that you have to go along with it as they leave it until such a late stage to tell you," she said. "Mariah Carey wouldn't be put on a show where she and an old guy are made the butt of the joke."
In the event Sinead slipped out the back. RTE presenter Anna Nolan stepped up to the plate and the show went ahead with the audience none the wiser.
