Monks Of Glenstal Abbey
"Biscantorat" - The Sound Of The Spirit from Glenstal Abbey
OUT: OCT 22nd 2004
HBCD0038

www.hummingbird.ie
This recording captures a moment of prayer at the Benedictine Abbey in Glenstal Abbey outside Limerick, Ireland featuring the monks singing plain and Gregorian chant, Christmas Carols and featuring guests Marie Bernadette O’Connor (formerly Sinead O’Connor) and Noirin Ni Riain and also the spoken word of John O’Donohue and Brother Patrick Hederman.
Gregorian chant is a classical part of the Benedictine monastic experience, forming the core of the Church's daily offices as they are chanted in choir from morning (Matins and Lauds) through mid-morning prayer and mid-day Mass, to evening (Vespers and Compline). With passionate intensity and yet sober restraint, it channels religious emotion and gives it musical expression.

Sinead’s extraordinary step in emotional plea to be ‘left alone’
Irish Examiner By Paul O’Brien [24th September 2004]

Thu 26th Aug - 7:30PM
SINGER Sinead O’Connor has taken out an extraordinary full-page advertisement in the national press in which she makes an emotional plea to be left alone.“I have been the whipping post of Ireland’s media for 20 years,” she says in a statement, which runs to more than 2,000 words...

Sinead O' Connor
Following the turbulent whirl of Sinead's controversial career, from wedding singer to outspoken, shaven-headed, Grammy-refusing thorn in the side of the music establishment.
Sinéad reinvents herself — again
The Irish Post [27th July 2004]
8th August 2004
SAY sayonara to Sinéad O’Connor, because the singer has killed herself off.
But in a move in keeping with her religious flirtations the controversial rocker has resurrected herself as Marie-Bernadette.
She says she now plans to go back to using her middle names, give up showbusiness life and concentrate instead on having babies and recording religious music.
It’s the latest twist in the rollercoaster life of the 37-year-old — who once said she was about to take a vow of chastity before giving birth to a second child.
Soon after, she appeared in clerical garb just after ripping up a picture of the Pope on stage.
In her latest pronouncement she said: “As far as I am concerned Sinéad O’Connor no longer exists.
“From now on, my intention is to record and perform music using my second name Marie-Bernadette and to only make religious music.”
The artist now known as Marie-Bernadette is currently mixing a new record with the monks of Glenstal Abbey and traditional singer Nóirín Ní Riain for release in November.
She said: “I hate being looked at. I’m 37 years of age. I’m not the 20-year-old big mouth I might have been.
“I got tired of being treated the way I was just because I was Sinéad O’Connor. I’m not a big, tough cookie — I’m a small woman.”
Baby Shane 'a joy'
from LARISSA NOLAN at OXEGEN Sunday Independent
11th July 2004
IT HAS been confirmed that traditional musician Donal Lunny is the father of Sinead O'Connor's baby. This puts to an end any lingering uncertainty about the paternity of Shane, who coincidentally was born on the same date as his father, March 10. "There never was any doubt," said a friend of Sinead's, "but the process of confirmation has been completed now."
A group of friends of the singer were in jubilant mood at the Oxegen festival yesterday and, when asked the reason, said they were celebrating Shane's and Sinead's good news. When contacted Ms O'Connor said, "Yes, I can confirm that Donal Lunny is the father of Shane." She refused to elaborate saying, "I have no further comment and I will not be speaking about this matter in the future."
Her friends confirmed that her joy at the birth of her son was undimmed by any controversy over the paternity.
"He is a beautiful, healthy baby, which is the most important thing to her. But she is greatly relieved for his sake that the paternity matter has been cleared up."
When I interviewed Donal Lunny three weeks ago, he refused to be drawn on any personal issues. He shook his head and said politely, "No, no, no". However, a statement issued when Ms O'Connor's pregnancy became public made it clear he would honour his responsibilities as a father.

Sinead's Bouncing Baby Boy Shane...
by www.showbiz-ireland.com [15th March 2004]
17th March 2004
Firebrand singer Sinead O'Connor gave birth to her third child last week and named the bouncing baby boy Shane, she will soon determine the identity of the child's father with a paternity test...
As Sinead O'Connor struggled down the steps of Holles Street Maternity Hospital with her new bundle of joy ShowBiz Ireland was on hand to take these first exclusive shots of the star with baby Shane.
The Nothing Compares to You singer gave birth to the 7lb baby boy early last Tuesday morning and she named the tot Shane, no-doubt after her close friend Shane MacGowan.
Sinead can now determine who the father of the baby is with a paternity test - it is rumoured that fellow musician Donal Lunny, with whom she had an affair with last year, will be the hand rocking this particular cradle.
Congratulations Sinead on your new arrival...
Singer Sinead keeps mum on naming new baby's dad

NOTHING compares to motherhood for Sinead O'Connor who has given birth to her third child.
The singer, who retired from the music business last year, gave birth to a baby boy, at 4.44am yesterday in a Dublin hospital.
The boy, named Shane, weighed a healthy seven pounds one ounce, despite having been born almost two weeks early.
Friends of the overjoyed 36-year-old singer said that, by a happy coincidence, yesterday was also her daughter Roisin's eighth birthday.
The rock star has previously refused to divulge the name of the baby's father.
"As far as the father of the baby is concerned, after the way the media behaved during the early stages of my pregnancy with Roisin, I would never put any man through that," she said.
The performer announced her retirement from music last April, saying she no longer wanted to be regarded as a famous person.

NOTHING COMPARES TO OUR STAR-STRUCK LISA
by KATINA READ www.thisissouthdevon.co.uk [15th January 2004]
15th January 2004
A Paignton woman appears in Stars in their Eyes on Saturday - more than two years after she first applied.
Lisa Fletcher, now part of the trio Halo with her husband Lee and German guitarist Markus Reuter, originally sent in a disc to the ITV1 programme in November 2001.
She was chosen out of 30,000 applicants to take part but the TV company was unable to gain permission for the song - Nothing Compares to You by Sinead O'Connor - to be used.
She was contacted again in July 2002 to take part in another series as permission had been given for the song to be sung.
It was recorded in September 2002 and was due to be aired early last year but was held back while producer Matthew Kelly was not presenting the programme.
Lisa, 37, of Elm Park, said: "It's been a really long journey for me. It was recorded so long ago I thought they would film a new series and axe the old one.
"It's been an amazing experience, a fantastic time and personally satisfying."
She added: "I'm quite an impulsive person, I got up on stage once at a Radio One road show in the 80s and sang a Lulu impression.
"For Stars in their Eyes, I shaved my head for the occasion. I did my outdoor film at Paignton Zoo and will be going back there for a party on the night it is aired."
And she said being able to sing a song from one of her favourite artists was a special experience.
She said: "To dress as that person, I felt like I was in someone else's skin. It was an amazing experience. It was amazing being up on stage and great seeing how TV works. Matthew is a lovely bloke, he's with you all the way. I've been a fan of the programme for years." The programme goes out on Saturday at 6.25pm.

Sinead in her own words
'I am proud of being called difficult, Louis'
DEAR Mr Walsh,
Since you chose, with a flick of your rather limp wrist, to dismiss myself and many other people more talented than you during your interview with Barry Egan in the Sunday Independent last week, I am responding in order that you might have a taste of your own medicine. Also in the hope that you might have a good look at your soul in some mirror and, in future, not be such an utter bitch, and instead of nastiness and cruel ignorance coming out every time your mouth opens, maybe something of some actual constructive use might be done by you in interviews. God help you, Louis, but you do come across as being very stupid when you go on as you do. And it's very bad for business.
When I rang you last Monday to ask how you could know if I am professionally "difficult", you stated that you don't know, but someone told you. So what are you doing making like other people's opinions are yours? I suppose it must be the same as you making out other people's talents are somehow yours. Which we all know they are not.
You are a vampire, Louis Walsh. God of a vampire business, a fake reality. A false God with no apparent soul of your own to feed upon. And seemingly no bleedin' mind of your own either, that you might find something of your actual own rolling around in.
A very patriarchal word, "difficult". Generally used by men who expect women to "behave" in certain ways. And when we do not, these men label us with words like "difficult", "deranged" and "crazy". As if we must be crazy not to be afraid of the likes of ye. If my being difficult makes me the opposite of what you think easy is, then I am proud of the label and I want you to know something. I am way more intelligent than a bunch of chauvinists like you and your cronies could imagine a mere woman to be. So let me tell you a thing or two, bitch. And you can pass it on to those of your arse-licking deacons who don't know it . . .
We don't all want what you want, Louis. Or want what managers want from artists. Which is that we should be prepared to put our careers before even our children. Work and work at getting material 'success', despite the cost to our souls, despite the cost being our happiness. And it's a rare manager who isn't off sunning himself on some yacht while the artists are breaking down and losing their souls after the media have had their little field days with us.
Managers encourage us to sell our souls to the media to make money for them and the business of music. But they ain't yer friend when you're in the shit for what they encouraged you to do. We are not supposed to be "difficult" and have desires or plans of our own. We are supposed to "play the game", though no one actually teaches us the rules, which are, metaphorically speaking: Suck music business cock. Yes, sir, no, sir, three bags frigging full sir. And yeah, sure, I can stick me tits out a bit more and smile at the fucking camera. But I won't open my mouth, like a good little girl. I'll be the fantasy you all want me to be, pouting like I'm ready to suck all your cocks. And why will I do it? Because if I don't, so-called "powerful" people will say I am "difficult" or even "crazy". So I'm everyone's whore.
What you mean when you refer, ignorantly, to me as being "difficult" is that I wouldn't let the music business fuck me. And I wouldn't behave in such a way as to let it make money out of me either. Because I am not a vampire.
Your other ignorant remark was that I am "a waste of talent". You should ask my children if that is true. Again, you do not know me, so you presume that singing was my only talent. I am a mother first and foremost. And that is my premier talent. And no, I have not, as the music business would have liked me to, abandoned my children entirely to go in search of God-like status in a vampire world, which teaches that fame is God. I have not set that example for my children. The effect that you, Louis Walsh, have had on the young people of this country is that they are not now heard to say "I want to be a singer" but, tragically, "I want to be famous". You teach them, by your bitchiness, that having a soul will get you nowhere if you want fame when it used to be that music was about the soul. You have single-handedly taken the soul out of Irish music and danced a vampire dance upon it. Your artists can't even sing in their own accents. Because of you, scores of young people want 'fame' so much that they are prepared to humiliate themselves by coming on crap shows like the awful one you are involved with, and have themselves subjected to abuse from you and other C-list so-called 'celebs' who seem to have no ability to respect the soft hearts of people who need love so much that they think fame is how they will get it. If you gave a shite about young people for anything but the money you can make off them, you would advise them to keep their souls for themselves and not go into the business of 'fame' and the vampire world that you inhabit.
I did not leave my children, or my soul, to go after huge stardom, though I could have. Because I did not want it. I simply wanted enough money to feed my children without having to depend on a man. And to express what was in my soul. Which was the type of pain that - if you are lucky, Louis - you will never have had to experience.
Or is your bullying manner the result of some vast pain that you hide? I often wonder. There must be a heart in there somewhere. Who squashed it with cruel talk, so that you bully every time you open your mouth to speak and you devastate even the poor young creatures whom you have been so happy to exploit in the past?
You do not advertise your services well. It's all very three-star, if I may say so. Who would want to be managed by someone who badmouths his clients when he has dumped them after what he calls their sell-by date, someone who tries to fuck up their future careers by referring to them as talentless?
You say yourself that no one every answers you back when you dis them - except me. Well, have a good mouthful from me on behalf of the young people you love to badmouth: You have been a slave-driver of young people. Nothing more. Nothing less. I have seen the way you work them. And you are gonna get burned.
I did not want what managers want. Or what the record industry stands for. I don't believe in the false teachings of the music business. Because I want my soul, the only thing which actually really exists. All that you believe in will fade away, Louis. And what will you do then, when you find you've forgotten your soul in pursuit of your God-like status? Isn't that a waste of talent?
At least while I was in the business of music - which I am, thank God, no longer - I achieved my plan.
And just because it didn't fit in with what your plan would have been, had I been so low in self-esteem that I had you for a manager, that does not mean I wasted Jack Shit. And if you ask me, your plan is a lot more insane than mine ever was. And what you think is important is, in fact, bullshite.
So . . . I am proud of being a "difficult" woman, thank you. And as for wasted talent, you should take a good look in a mirror.

Sinead O'Connor
Když jste si vybral mě a mnoho dalších lidí, kteří mají mnohem víc talentu než vy, abyste nás rozcupoval během interview v Independent, odpovídám, abyste ochutnal svou vlastní medicínu.

A můžeš to poslat dál těm, kteří to ještě neví...
Ne všichni chtějí to, co chcete vy, Louisi. Nebo co manažeři požadují od umělců. To znamená být připraven položit kariéru dokonce před své děti.

A proč to udělám?

A k tomu "promarněnému talentu" - měl by ses dobře podívat do zrcadla.

Singer Sinead O'Connor has launched a blistering attack on pop impresario Louis Walsh in response to his claims last week that she was a "wasted talent" and is"difficult".
In what has become an acrimonious and deeply personal feud between two of the biggest names in the music industry, Ms O'Connor makes a devastating critique of Walsh, of boy bands and of the You're a Star instant famephenomenon.
"You have been a slave-driver of young people," she writes. "I have seen the way you work them. And you are gonna get burned."
Replying to his remarks in last week's Sunday Independent, denounces the chauvinism of the pop industry. Yesterday, Louis Walsh refused to respond, saying: "I'm not going to retaliate, it's not worth it. It's too easy to slag her off."
She rails against the "nastiness and cruel ignorance" of Mr Walsh, who created Boyzone and still manages Westlife, Samantha Mumba, Girls Aloud and Bellefire, and calls him "a vampire".
"There must be a heart in there somewhere," she says. "Who squashed it with cruel talk, so that you bully every time you open your mouth to speak?"
She tells Walsh: "You have single-handedly taken the soul out of Irish music and danced a vampire dance upon it."
Of the artists in his stable, she says they "can't even sing in their own accents. Because of you, scores of young people want 'fame' so much that they are prepared to humiliate themselves by coming on crap shows like the awful one you are involved with."
O'Connor is angry at the treatment handed out toyoung hopefuls. "They have themselves subjected to abuse from you and other C-list so-called 'celebs' who seem to have no ability to respect the soft hearts of people who need love so much that they think fame is how they will get it."
In an interview with Barry Egan in last week's Sunday Independent, Louis Walsh said of Sinead O'Connor, "I do love her music but I think she's difficult," and described her as "a wasted talent".
In response, she writes: "You do not know me, so you presume that singing was my only talent. I am a mother first and foremost. And that is my premier talent."
Last week, O'Connor had phoned Walsh to ask him to explain his remarks. "When I rang you last Monday to ask how you could know if I am professionally 'difficult', you stated that you don't know, but someone told you. So what are you doing making like other people's opinions are yours?" she writes in today's Sunday Independent. "You are a vampire, Louis Walsh. God of a vampire business, a fake reality. A false God with no apparent soul of your own to feed upon. And seemingly no bleedin' mind of your own either," she blasts.
Ms O'Connor - who once tore up a photograph of the Pope during a live TV performance, infuriating Catholics worldwide - writes that "difficult" is a term generally used by men who expect women to "behave" in certain ways.
"And when we do not, these men label us with words like 'difficult', 'deranged' and 'crazy'. As if we must be crazy not to be afraid of the likes of ye. If my being difficult makes me the opposite of what you think easy is, then I am proud of the label and I want you to know something. I am way more intelligent than a bunch of chauvinists like you and your cronies could imagine a mere woman to be," she says.
Ms O'Connor says that in the music industry, managers "encourage us to sell our souls to the media to make money for them and the business of music. But they ain't yer friend when you're in the shit for what they encouraged you to do."
Addressing Louis Walsh, she suggests: "You might have a good look at your soul in some mirror and, in future, not be such an utter bitch, and instead of nastiness and cruel ignorance coming out every time your mouth opens, maybe something of some actual constructive use may be done by you in interviews. You do come across as being very stupid when you go on as you do. And it's very bad forbusiness.
"You do not advertise your services well. It's all very three-star, if I may say so. Who would want to be managed by someone who badmouths his clients when he has dumped them after what he calls their sell-by date?" she asks
She concludes: "So . . . I am proud of being a 'difficult' woman, thank you. And as for wasted talent, you should take a good look in a mirror."
V zatrpklém a hluboce osobním sporu mezi dvěma největšími jmény hudebního průmyslu Sinead podrobila zdrcující kritice Walshe, chlapecké skupiny a pomíjivý fenomén slávy "Ty jsi hvězda".
"Jsi otrokář mladých lidí", píše. "Viděla jsem, jakým způsobem je zpracováváš. A za to půjdeš do pekla."

V opovědi na Walshova vyjádření v Sunday Independent zpěvačka odsuzuje šovinismus popového průmyslu. Včera Louis Walsh odmítl zareagovat, vyjádřil se: "Nehodlám oplácet stejnými prostředky, nestojí to za to. Je příliš snadné ji setřít."
Zpěvačka proklíná "podlost a krutou neznalost" p. Walshe, který stvořil Boyzone a stále je manažerem Westlife, Samantha Mumba, Girls Aloud a Bellefire, a nazývá ho "upírem".
"Někde tam uvnitř musí být srdce", píše. "Kdo ho rozdrtil krutými řečmi, že jsi krutý pokaždé, když otevřeš svá ústa, abys promluvil?"
Píše Walshovi: "Vlastnoručně jsi zbavil irskou hudbu duše a tancuješ nad ní upíří tanec."

Na adresu Louise Walshe dále píše: "Měl by ses dobře podívat do své duše v nějakém zrcadle a do budoucnosti, nebýt takový naprostý hajzl.

A k tomu "promarněnému talentu" – měl by ses dobře podívat do zrcadla."

American singer Lauryn Hill, from a stage used by the Pope, shocked Catholic officials at a concert by telling them to "repent" and alluding to sexual abuse of children by U.S. priests.
The broadside came during the recording Saturday night of a Christmas concert attended by top Vatican cardinals, bishops and many elite of Italian society, witnesses said.
Hill made her comments when taking the microphone to sing at the concert, held in the same huge hall and stage Pope John Paul uses for his weekly general audiences and other events. The Pope was not present.
"I did not come here to celebrate the birth of Christ with you but to ask you why you are not in mourning for his death inside this place," she said according to a transcript of her statement run by the Rome newspaper La Repubblica.
A spokesman for Prime Time Productions, the concert's organizers, said the newspaper's quotes were accurate.
"God has been a witness to the corruption of his leadership, of the exploitation and abuses ... by the clergy," she said.
This was an apparent reference to the scandal in the United States last year over the sexual abuse of children by priests.
Hill told the crowd to seek blessings "from God not men" and said she did "not believe in representatives of God on earth."
A few feet away in the front row sat five cardinals, including Edmund Szoka, American governor of Vatican City.
Hill, 28, did not sing the song listed on the program but instead sang a song about social injustice.
Organizers said Hill's outburst and performance would most probably be cut from the show when it is aired on Christmas Eve.
Hill shot to fame in the mid-1990s with band The Fugees, whose album "The Score" sold 17 million copies, to become one of the biggest hip-hop chart successes of all time.
She went on to win five Grammy awards for her debut solo album, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill." She has a son and daughter by Rohan Marley, the son of Reggae legend Bob Marley.
Mluvčí Prime Time Productions, organizátorů koncertu, uvedl, že citace novin byly přesné.
Lauryn Hill získala pět cen Grammy za své debutové sólové album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill".

Talk about an ungrateful and rude guest. American R&B singer Lauryn Hill was invited to sing at the Vatican Christmas concert, but instead of doing her thing and hitting the road, she pulled a Sinead O'Connor. She asked them why they were celebrating Christ's birth and not mourning his death. (Um, maybe because he's not dead anymore, but resurrected, and we rember his death and resurrection at Easter?) Then she told people to seek blessings "from God not men" and that she did "not believe in representatives of God on Earth." To top it off, she didn't sing the Christmas song she was supposed to sing.
Hey, Lauryn, if you were so mad, why did you show up? Thanks for spitting in the faith of a billion Catholics. We'll be sure not to rush out and buy your records. Can you imagine inviting someone into your house only to be cussed out by them and insulted by them?
Nebudeme tě vyrušovat a kupovat si tvoje nahrávky. Dovedeš si představit, že si někoho pozveš do svého domu jen proto, aby tě haněl a napadal?
